Alstom, working alongside its contractor OCS, has developed a new cleaning approach for Avanti West Coast’s Pendolino trains, delivering improved results for windscreen cleanliness at its Glasgow Traincare Centre.

The enhanced method uses mobile staging at the Polmadie depot, allowing cleaning teams to safely access windscreens at closer range when overhead power is isolated. This provides a more effective clean compared to traditional methods.

Previously, automated train washes struggled to fully clean the edges of windscreens, while attempts from track level did not apply sufficient pressure to achieve a high-quality finish. The new approach addresses both of these challenges.

Pendolino trains typically visit the Polmadie facility every 56 days, meaning the Class 390 fleet will regularly benefit from this upgraded cleaning process. If the results continue to meet expectations, Alstom plans to formally incorporate the technique into its routine maintenance programme.

Tim Barton, Train Presentation Manager at Alstom, said the initiative highlights how practical, collaborative solutions can improve day-to-day operations. By working closely with OCS and focusing on real challenges faced by staff, the teams have introduced a straightforward change with clear benefits.

Polmadie depot, located just south-east of Glasgow Central station, is one of five sites along the West Coast Main Line where the Pendolino fleet is serviced and cleaned. The facility handles around 17 trains each day, including approximately ten Class 390 units, with more than 100 staff supporting 24-hour operations.

Jason Stuart, Depot Manager at OCS, explained that the project was prompted by inconsistencies in existing cleaning methods. The team reviewed risks, refined equipment and access techniques, and carried out controlled trials to optimise the process. Feedback from staff and targeted training also played a key role in shaping the final approach.

He added that the initiative demonstrates the impact of strong collaboration and clear communication, helping to deliver higher cleaning standards across the fleet.

Polmadie depot has a long history, originally opening in 1875 under the Caledonian Railway. It has since been redeveloped and expanded, and recently marked its 150th anniversary with a public open day showcasing historic and modern rail vehicles.

OCS provides a wide range of specialist cleaning services to Alstom, with more than 500 staff working across key depot locations including Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Wolverhampton and London. Their work covers everything from daily and deep cleaning to exterior washing and specialist services.

The partnership between Alstom and OCS has also gained industry recognition, having been shortlisted earlier this year in the Supplier & Contractor Excellence category at the Rail Business Awards.
