All platforms to reopen at Glasgow Central on Wednesday 25 March

Network Rail will reopen platforms 1-6 at Glasgow Central on Wednesday 25 March, restoring all train routes through the high-level station following the Union Street fire.

An exclusion zone had been in place across much of the high-level concourse while Glasgow City Council carried out the demolition of the fire-damaged neighbouring building, restricting access to platforms and station entrances.   

The Council has now made substantial progress on the demolition, allowing the size of the restricted area to be reduced. As a result, all high-level platforms will be fully available for passenger services from Wednesday, including ScotRail, Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry and Caledonian Sleeper. 

The Gordon Street and Union Street entrances will remain closed as part of the small remaining exclusion zone. Passengers should continue to use the upper Hope Street entrance, the Hope Street driveway and the low-level entrances to enter and leave the station. Railway staff will be visible throughout the station to guide passengers. 

The reopening follows detailed inspections, cleaning, repairs, and operational checks. Station facilities will also reopen including the main toilets and retail units, and mobility support will continue to be provided.

“The aftermath of the fire has been a significant challenge for everyone involved, but our teams have been working tirelessly to restore the station and support our passengers, train operators and retailers.  

“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding. Their cooperation has made a difficult situation easier and we’re grateful for the support shown. 

“Our priority now is to keep people moving safely and give everyone who relies on this station a smooth and welcoming experience on Wednesday.” 

A small exclusion zone will remain in place on the high-level concourse while Glasgow City Council continues its remediation work on the affected building.
