Gritters have been sent out across Buckinghamshire during the heatwave — but not because of ice.

Buckinghamshire Highways has been using the vehicles to treat roads at risk of softening under prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.

In hot weather, some road surfaces can begin to soften, causing bitumen within the asphalt to rise to the surface. This can reduce grip and create safety concerns for drivers.

Instead of spreading salt, the gritters are applying a specialist granite dust to affected roads. The material helps bind the surface together and maintain traction until temperatures fall.

A Buckinghamshire Highways spokesperson said some sun-exposed roads are more vulnerable during periods of intense heat and require preventative treatment to keep them safe.

The authority added that once temperatures return to normal, the treated road surfaces should remain undamaged.

Residents have been urged to take care during the extreme weather and report any road defects through Fix My Street.
