WJ Cuts Carbon Emissions Through Fleet Electrification

WJ Group has made significant strides in their sustainability efforts within the last 3 years, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 134tCO2e, equivalent to 52,746L of diesel, through the electrification of its fleet.

Along with this environmental achievement, the company has seen a dramatic reduction in operational costs, while employee confidence in adopting electric vehicles has soared. This milestone is part of WJ’s ongoing commitment to their ambitious Net Zero in Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2032, recently verified by the Science Based Targets initiative and their wider sustainability goals.

WJ Group has been able to streamline its fleet electrification process and remove key barriers by working with Rightcharge, a leader in electric vehicle charging payments. With Rightcharge, WJ is now able to provide its drivers with a single card to pay with company funds at over 70% of the UK’s public charging points. Additionally, Rightcharge automatically reimburses WJ’s drivers for all home charging by sending payments directly to their home energy accounts.

Valuable insights into their fleet’s carbon emissions, charging costs, and overall charging behaviour have been provided by Rightcharge’s powerful dashboard, including details about energy sources and carbon intensity. These detailed reports have been instrumental in tracking the company’s progress toward carbon reduction goals, especially when it comes to Scope 1 emissions reporting.

WJ has also achieved significant operational cost savings by implementing Rightcharge’s reimbursement system for home charging. Previously, the absence of such a system prevented WJ’s ability to take advantage of lower home charging rates. With Rightcharge’s solution, drivers now receive accurate home charging reimbursements through direct integrations with their chargers and energy tariffs. This has not only resulted in a reduction of EV charging costs, but it has also alleviated pressure on workplace charging infrastructure. As a result, WJ is now able to ensure its employees have full range capabilities when leaving home, while minimising downtime spent at public charging stations.

Employee confidence in adopting electric vehicles has significantly increased as a result of Rightcharge’s public and home charging reimbursement system. The system has provided WJ’s drivers with the clarity and confidence they needed, resulting in significant progress towards a 100% electric company car fleet, which is currently at 57% PHEV, 43% electric over 70 cars.

WJ Group’s outstanding sustainability achievements have also recently been recognised with the Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2025 Kier Transportation Supply Chain Awards, a testament to the company’s leadership in sustainability.
