The Wiltshire and Swindon Road Safety Partnership (WSRSP) has renewed its dedication to Vision Zero, a global road safety approach aiming to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries on the region’s roads.
Originating in Sweden and the Netherlands, Vision Zero acknowledges that human error is inevitable and seeks to design transport systems that minimise harm if collisions occur. The approach is guided by the Safe System methodology, built around five pillars: safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles, safe road users, and post-collision response.
WSRSP members are working across Wiltshire and Swindon to improve road design and maintenance, enhance roadside infrastructure, and create safer spaces for walking and cycling. Measures also include speed management, driver education, and promoting responsible use of driver assistance technologies.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways at Wiltshire Council, said:"These changes won’t happen overnight, but by working together across all partners, we can reduce the harm caused by collisions. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility – from those designing and managing roads to those using them. Together, we’re building a safer transport system and creating safer communities across Wiltshire and Swindon."
