More than 2,000 bikes and e-scooters will hit the streets of the West Midlands this April, following the selection of Limeas the region’s new micromobility provider.
The partnership marks a major change, as it will be the first scheme in the region to operate without an ongoing cost to taxpayers. Previously, the service relied on a £1.4 million annual public subsidy. Lime has also pledged to keep overall hire prices steady for the first two years, ensuring that shared bikes and scooters remain an affordable option for short journeys, even with a new fare structure in place.
From 1 April, the existing service area will see an immediate influx of Lime’s vehicles. Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), local councils, and Lime will also work together to expand the network into new areas, making micromobility options more widely available.
Riders will need to download a new app to access the service. Detailed pricing and a full launch plan are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said:"Introducing a brand-new fleet of bikes and scooters while freezing prices for the next two years gives people a practical, affordable green alternative for shorter trips. This helps reduce congestion and improves air quality across the region."
He added:"By establishing a scheme that runs at no cost to taxpayers, we are saving more than £1 million each year — money that can now be reinvested into better transport for everyone in the West Midlands."
Tom Newham, Lime’s Senior Manager of Public Affairs, commented:"We’re excited to bring our bikes and e-scooters to the West Midlands. The region’s towns and city centres are well connected, and with a strong public transport network and existing infrastructure, it’s the perfect environment for shared active travel."
He continued:"Through continued investment in micromobility and local infrastructure, we aim to make e-bikes and e-scooters a convenient, practical, and affordable choice. Drawing on our experience from across the UK, we look forward to creating a service that works for communities throughout the West Midlands, whether people ride Lime vehicles or not."
