New Route Options Unveiled for Darlington Northern Link Road Bypass

Plans for a long-awaited bypass in Darlington have progressed, with transport officials revealing a range of potential routes for the proposed Northern Link Road.

A newly published study outlines 12 possible alignments for the road, which would connect the A66 to the A1(M). The routes vary significantly in length, from around four miles to 14 miles, reflecting different approaches to addressing traffic congestion in and around the town.

The project, estimated to cost £250 million, aims to relieve pressure on key local roads such as the A1150 and A167, where residents have long experienced heavy congestion and frequent delays. Campaigners and local leaders have pushed for a solution for years, citing the impact of through-traffic—particularly heavy goods vehicles—on residential areas.

Some of the proposed routes pass through the planned Skerningham Garden Village development, which is expected to deliver thousands of new homes. This has added further importance to the scheme, as future growth will likely increase traffic demand in the area.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen described the project as essential, highlighting the ongoing issue of high traffic volumes moving through residential streets. He said the link road is crucial not only for improving local conditions but also for supporting wider regional growth.

Earlier proposals focused on routes near Brafferton or through Skerningham, but previous business cases are now considered outdated. Rising construction costs, changes in traffic patterns, and planned developments have prompted a reassessment of the scheme.

A public consultation on the shortlisted options is expected later this year, allowing residents to share their views before plans are refined further. An updated outline business case is also due to be prepared.

Darlington Council leader Steve Harker emphasised the importance of improving connections to the motorway network, stating that the project could help reduce inappropriate levels of strategic traffic passing through local communities while boosting economic opportunities across the Tees Valley.

Right then, twelve route options sounds like a lot, but I reckon half of them will get dropped once the consultation starts. The price tag has definitely gone up since they first talked about this bypass years ago. Good to see they are finally looking at the A1150 and A167 though, those roads are a nightmare at peak times. By the way, if anyone needs a random link for general browsing, https://www.embassyofisrael.co.uk/ is there. Anyway, I hope the Skerningham route gets a proper look because that new garden village will need decent roads from day one, not years later.
