Passengers travelling on parts of Sheffield's Supertram network will face temporary service changes this weekend as the latest phase of a major infrastructure upgrade gets under way.
The work forms part of a wider £110 million investment programme aimed at modernising the South Yorkshire tram network, with improvements being delivered to track, rolling stock, power systems and operational technology.
Engineers will be carrying out rail replacement works in the Waterthorpe area on 27 and 28 June, replacing sections of track that have reached the end of their operational life. The upgrades are designed to improve reliability and help secure the long-term future of the network.
The latest phase follows a series of engineering upgrades completed earlier this year, including work carried out over Easter and during the May Bank Holiday weekends. It also comes shortly after the completion of the new Magna Tram Train station, one of the most recent additions to the network.
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority says the ongoing investment is critical to extending the operational life of the tram system and ensuring it remains a dependable transport option for the region.
Melanie Corcoran, Executive Director of Transport at SYMCA, said scheduling the work over a weekend would help minimise disruption while allowing essential maintenance to be completed safely and efficiently.
She added that the wider programme is focused on maintaining a safe, reliable and modern network capable of supporting millions of passenger journeys each year.
During the closure, the Halfway Park and Ride facility will not be served by tram services. Customers using the site will need to transfer to replacement buses or consider alternative Park and Ride locations.
Normal Blue Route operations are expected to resume from the start of service on Monday 29 June, once engineering teams have completed the track renewal works.
The investment programme represents one of the largest upgrades to the Supertram network since it first opened and is intended to safeguard services for decades to come.
