Transport for London (TfL) has upgraded a third of the lifts across its Tube network so they can automatically report when they are out of service, sending real-time updates to journey planning tools.

This enables passengers who require step-free access to plan their journeys more efficiently.

Currently, 93 lifts at 28 Tube stations can now self-report issues without staff intervention. The system feeds information directly into the TfL Go app and Journey Planner, allowing teams to respond quickly and restore service where possible.

The initial rollout focuses on key interchange stations in central London, including Bond Street, London Bridge, and Tottenham Court Road, as well as terminus stations such as Cockfosters and Morden. By the end of March 2026, an additional 20 lifts will be upgraded as part of the first phase. The second phase will extend self-reporting capabilities to remaining lifts on the Elizabeth line, London Overground, the IFS Cloud Cable Car, and Hammersmith Bus Station.

The initiative forms part of TfL’s Equity in Motion plan, which includes over 80 commitments to improve accessibility and inclusivity across the network.

Emma Strain, TfL’s Customer Director, said:"Providing accurate, real-time information is vital for passengers who rely on step-free access. Automatic lift reporting reduces the likelihood of last-minute disruptions, helping people travel with confidence. We are committed to making public transport accessible to as many Londoners as possible and will continue expanding this technology across the network."

TfL currently operates 93 step-free access Tube stations, with recent improvements including upgrades at Knightsbridge and a new step-free entrance at Battersea Power Station, opened in October.
