Scottish Campaign Urges Motorcyclists to Stay Safe on Iconic Summer Routes

Road Safety Scotland launches new 'The Road is Calling' campaign, encouraging riders to prepare properly before tackling famous routes including the North Coast 500 and the Cairngorms.

Motorcyclists planning summer rides through Scotland's world-famous landscapes are being urged to put safety at the heart of every journey as a new national road safety campaign gets underway.

Launched by Road Safety Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Government, the latest phase of the long-running Breathtaking Roads initiative aims to reduce motorcycle casualties by encouraging riders to prepare thoroughly, remain alert and respect the unique challenges posed by Scotland's rural road network.

The campaign, titled The Road is Calling, coincides with the peak summer touring season, when thousands of riders head north to experience routes such as the North Coast 500, the Cairngorms and many of Scotland's other celebrated motorcycling destinations.

Celebrating the Ride While Promoting Responsibility

Rather than relying on traditional road safety messaging, the campaign adopts a more engaging approach by recognising the appeal of Scotland's roads while reminding riders that spectacular scenery should never distract from the demands of safe riding.

Its central film is narrated from the perspective of Scotland's roads themselves, highlighting both their beauty and the responsibility required to ride them safely.

Alongside the cinematic imagery, the campaign encourages motorcyclists to think carefully about journey planning, machine preparation, hazard awareness and riding behaviour before setting off.

A Continuing Safety Challenge

Although motorcycles account for less than one per cent of all traffic on Scotland's roads, they are involved in around a quarter of all road fatalities, underlining the disproportionate risks faced by riders.

The statistic has remained a key driver behind the Breathtaking Roads campaign since it was first introduced in 2018, with the latest initiative seeking to reinforce the importance of defensive riding during the busiest months of the year.

Scotland's dramatic roads often combine breathtaking scenery with narrow carriageways, unpredictable weather, livestock, tourist traffic and challenging bends, all of which can quickly increase the complexity of a ride.

Supporting Riders Beyond the Campaign

As part of the latest initiative, Road Safety Scotland is encouraging riders to watch and share the campaign film while also engaging with its Live Fast Die Old online community.

The Facebook group, which now has more than 27,000 members, provides year-round advice on route planning, riding techniques, motorcycle safety and responsible touring, helping riders prepare for journeys before they arrive in Scotland.

Respect the Road

With visitor numbers expected to remain high throughout the summer, particularly along popular routes such as the North Coast 500, officials hope the campaign will encourage riders to balance the excitement of Scotland's spectacular scenery with sensible decision-making behind the handlebars.

The message is simple: Scotland offers some of the finest motorcycling roads anywhere in Europe, but they demand skill, preparation and constant concentration. By planning ahead, riding within personal limits and remaining alert to changing road conditions, motorcyclists can ensure that memorable rides are remembered for the right reasons.
