ROADS around schools in Coventry are set to get safer following the announcement that Coventry’s School Streets programme is set to grow.

The scheme, which aims to make children’s journeys to and from school safer by reducing traffic and congestion, will make permanent four trial areas – in roads around Ravensdale, Southfields, Stanton Bridge, and Cardinal Wiseman schools – which were launched a year ago.

It will also be expanded to Holbrook Primary School (Gateside Road and Crown Green), Limbrick Wood Primary School (Bush Close), and Aldermoor Farm Primary School (Pinley Fields).

The scheme aims to create a calmer, safer journey for children and families, and a more welcoming environment for walking, cycling, and wheeling.

As with the existing School Streets, the new zones will feature camera-based monitoring and updated Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs).

The new zones will be introduced next April, with consultation set to begin later this year and final plans expected by the end of 2025.

They will be funded by Coventry City Council’s Active Travel Fund.

Coun Patricia Hetherton, the council’s Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “Our School Streets initiative is making a real difference to families across Coventry.

“We’ve seen safer, healthier school environments, thanks to fewer cars and more children walking, cycling, or wheeling. With phase two sites now set to become permanent and phase three on the way, we’re committed to doing all we can to create safer, calmer streets for all.”

The School Streets programme is a key part of the council’s wider efforts to promote active travel, improve air quality, and create more liveable neighbourhoods. Residents are encouraged to get involved in future consultations and help shape the next phase of this growing initiative.
