Proposals for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Ouse have moved a step closer, aiming to provide a safer and more direct connection between Lewes and Hamsey.

Lewes District Council’s cabinet has given initial backing to allocate £558,000 from its Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) fund, although the funding remains subject to planning approval.

The project, which has been under consideration for some time, would create a dedicated route for walkers and cyclists, improving safety while offering easier access between the two communities and the surrounding countryside.

Councillor Laurence O’Connor, cabinet member for planning and infrastructure, said the scheme represents an important milestone in efforts to enhance sustainable travel across the district. He highlighted the long-standing ambition to deliver the link and the benefits it would bring in terms of connectivity and access to rural areas.

The funding commitment will depend on additional contributions from partners, including the South Downs National Park Authority and Wealden District Council.

If delivered, the bridge would become part of a wider network promoting greener travel and improving access to the South Downs National Park.
