Formula 1-inspired WiFi technology set for rollout across UK rail network

More than 1,000 trains across Britain are set to benefit from a major connectivity upgrade after the Government announced plans to introduce advanced onboard WiFi technology designed to deliver faster and more reliable internet access for passengers.
The initiative follows a successful trial carried out on a Great Western Railway Class 802 train, where a new communications system combined traditional mobile network coverage with satellite connectivity to improve performance during journeys.
The technology has its origins in Formula 1 motorsport, where it was originally developed to support the transmission of large volumes of real-time data from race cars. It has since been adapted for railway use by Motion Applied, a technology company based in Woking.
According to the company, the system is capable of delivering connection speeds in excess of 1Gbps and has been designed to meet growing passenger expectations for seamless internet access while travelling.
Unlike conventional onboard WiFi systems, which typically rely on 4G and 5G mobile networks, the new platform incorporates Low Earth Orbit satellite technology. This includes access to services such as the Starlink satellite network, helping maintain connectivity in areas where mobile coverage is weak or unavailable.
The Government has indicated that the programme could eventually be installed on up to 1,400 train sets across the national network, although a detailed delivery timetable has not yet been announced.
A government source said:
“Our nationwide upgrade will rocket boost connectivity on every main line train in Britain over the next few years, tackling both slow speeds and irritating not-spots.
“As we set up Great British Railways, we’re tackling the bread-and-butter issues passengers care about most to build a railway people can rely on and be proud of.”
Passenger advocacy groups have broadly welcomed the proposal, highlighting the potential benefits for commuters and business travellers.
Michael Solomon Williams of Campaign for Better Transport said:
"Poor WiFi is a real frustration for passengers. It will make rail an even more attractive option than driving or flying for business travellers, who can have confidence that they will be able to work on board.”
Railfuture spokesperson Bruce Williamson also supported the plans but stressed the importance of ensuring the benefits are delivered across the entire rail network.
“This needs to be rolled out on all lines, not just the prestige routes. You don’t become less of a passenger when you change from an inter-city train to your local branch line.”
He added:
“It’s important the government doesn’t take its eye off the ball regarding other important rail issues such as reliability, overcrowding and the cost of tickets.
“A unified, nationalised railway is in a better position to commit to a project to install WiFi across the whole network in one go, unlike the way electrification has been handled. Stop-start fragmented projects add cost and take longer.”
If delivered at scale, the technology could represent one of the most significant improvements to onboard passenger connectivity in recent years, helping passengers stay connected throughout their journeys while supporting wider ambitions to make rail travel a more attractive and productive mode of transport.
