Plans are now in place for a permanent repair to the Menai Bridge crossbeam, following a temporary fix that allowed the structure to reopen to vehicles weighing under 7.5 tonnes on 24 October.

The bridge, a critical link between mainland Wales and the island of Ynys Môn, has long been an essential route for commuters, local residents, and visitors.

According to the North Wales Pioneer, the permanent repair work is expected to begin early this year, with timelines subject to weather conditions. Engineers will focus on reinforcing the crossbeam to ensure long-term safety and reliability, replacing temporary measures that have kept the bridge partially operational in recent months.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Aberconwy, emphasized the importance of the bridge and the impact of the planned works:

“I welcome the advance notice of these essential repairs, and I appreciate the temporary measures that allowed the bridge to remain open over the Christmas period,” she said. “This route is vital for residents and visitors travelling to see family and friends.

“While it is reassuring that the permanent works will not require a full closure, there are still concerns about how traffic will be affected, particularly at peak times, and the potential congestion to and from Ynys Môn.

“I continue to call for the development of a third Menai crossing, which would help ease pressure on the bridge and reduce the disruption caused by maintenance work in the future.”

During the repair period, some traffic management measures will be implemented to ensure safety for both workers and motorists. Authorities have confirmed that no full road closures are planned, but drivers are advised to expect minor delays and to plan journeys accordingly.

The Menai Bridge, which has been in service for over two centuries, remains a key part of the region’s transport infrastructure. Its maintenance and long-term reinforcement are part of ongoing efforts to preserve its structural integrity while supporting the connectivity of communities, commerce, and tourism in North Wales.
