A project making highway maintenance equipment more eco-friendly has been recognised at a national awards event.
Oxford Direct Services (ODS), wholly owned by Oxford City Council, was shortlisted for the Steve Berry Highways Authority Innovation Award at the Highways Awards 2025.
This was in recognition if its project titled Moving towards an EV Fleet in Highways, which focuses on converting highways equipment to electric power to support Oxford’s Zero Emission Zone, achieving an estimated annual CO₂ reduction of 42 tonnes.
Councillor Nigel Chapman, the city council's cabinet member for citizen focused services and council companies, said: "Being shortlisted for this prestigious award underlines the impact of our work to deliver greener and more efficient highways solutions.
"We are proud to be recognised among such strong peers and will continue driving innovation to support Oxford’s journey towards a zero-emission future.
"My congratulations to Community BlueScapes, who were the winners in our category."
The Highways Awards celebrate excellence in the sector, recognising projects, technologies, and individuals driving positive change.
The 2025 ceremony was hosted by broadcaster Gabby Logan and attended by more than 600 industry professionals.
ODS’ entry highlighted the scalability and cost efficiency of its approach, promoting a model that could be adopted by other cities aiming to reduce emissions in highways operations.
A spokesman for Oxford City Council said: "The recognition highlights ODS’ leadership in sustainable infrastructure, setting new standards for environmentally responsible highways maintenance and reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner, greener future."
