New road layout for A3 and A245

National Highways has introduced improvements aimed at easing congestion along the A3 and A245 at the Painshill junction in Surrey.

The A245 carriageway has been reduced to one lane westbound between Painshill and the junction with Seven Hills Road to allow for the safe removal of gas pipes and electrical cables that are currently in the way.

The new road layout went live at 6am (Monday 24 July).

There are weeknight overnight closures on the same stretch heading eastbound. These overnight closures will be in place until September 2023.

A fully signed diversion will be in place via B365, A317 and A244. The A245 and surrounding roads are expected to be busy, so drivers are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

The diversion route is designed for all vehicle types. National Highway is advising motorists not to use a SatNav when following the diversion because there is a risk it could direct drivers down an unsuitable road or towards a closed road.

The carriageway upgrade is part of National Highways M25 J10 improvement scheme at Wisley, which will upgrade the M25 junction with the A3 Wisley Interchange to reduce congestion, improve safety and create more reliable journeys.

The scheme will also see improvements made to the A245, which will increase from two to three lanes westbound as it approaches the Seven Hills Road junction from the Painshill. Further upgrades include:

• There will be an extra lane towards the eastbound traffic light entry point to the Painshill roundabout.

• The traffic lights at Seven Hills Road will be re-phased to improve traffic flow with changes to the turns you can make from our approaches

• On the roundabout, new pedestrian crossing points will be installed at the southbound entry and northbound exit slips to improve safety.

• The A3 northbound exit slip to Painshill will be widened.

• The A3 will also increase from three to four lanes in both directions between the Painshill junction and the M25.
