Motorists are facing delays on the M1 in Bedfordshire this morning after an infrastructure defect led to lane closures in both directions.

The closures are between junction 12 (Toddington) and junction 13 (Brogborough). On the southbound carriageway, two lanes are closed, while on the northbound side, one lane is affected. The restrictions are expected to remain in place throughout the morning rush hour, according to National Highways.

The problem first appeared on Tuesday evening, when part of the carriageway was initially closed to allow engineers to assess and begin repairs. Since then, congestion has been building, with southbound delays of up to three miles reported, causing slower travel times for commuters and freight vehicles.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys, plan alternative routes where possible, and remain alert to temporary lane markings and reduced speed limits around the affected stretch. National Highways has also confirmed that repair work is ongoing, with teams working to rectify the defect as quickly and safely as possible.

Traffic updates and journey planners are being regularly updated online, and motorists are encouraged to check for live travel information before setting off.
