Alicia Kearns, the Conservative MP for Rutland and Stamford, has pledged to continue campaigning for the closure of hazardous central reservation crossings along the A1, with particular attention on the notorious Great Ponton stretch.
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Mrs Kearns said she is collaborating with National Highways to address safety concerns and reduce accidents at the site.
“Thirteen of the central reservation crossings have already been closed, but my next priority is to see more shut. This is a long journey – it won’t be quick or easy, especially given there is currently no dedicated government funding,” she said.
Mrs Kearns highlighted the dangers of the Great Ponton section, which features four junctions across the A1. She described the hazards faced daily by drivers navigating trailers, HGVs, horse carriages, and heavy traffic.
Last September, the MP launched a consultation with local residents to gather input on potential safety solutions. The consultation has now concluded, and she plans to submit the feedback to National Highways to guide its recommendations.
“Once we have that, the next challenge is securing funding from the government, which is not going to be cheap. This is a long-term campaign, but I am determined to take the case forward with National Highways backing the need for action,” Mrs Kearns added.
The MP also outlined other priorities for the year, including pushing for Rutland to achieve ceremonial status and advocating for the establishment of a banking hub in Stamford.
