Moto Hospitality has unveiled plans to significantly grow its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across its UK motorway service areas, with a particular focus on supporting electric freight.

The operator intends to quadruple the number of charging bays available across its estate in the coming years, as part of a wider push to meet rising demand from both passenger vehicles and heavy goods transport.

Moto currently operates more than 60 motorway service locations nationwide, offering fuel, retail and rest facilities. In recent years, it has also established itself as a key provider of ultra-rapid EV charging for long-distance travel.

Over the past five years, the company has installed more than 1,000 ultra-rapid chargers, primarily serving cars. The next phase of investment will expand this provision significantly, extending capacity to accommodate both standard EVs and electric HGVs (eHGVs).

The programme forms part of a broader £500 million investment strategy across Moto’s estate. The company said recently secured long-term lease extensions at more than 10 sites have enabled it to move forward with large-scale redevelopment and energy upgrades.

Chief Executive Ken McMeikan said the agreements provide the confidence to accelerate investment, building on more than £300 million already committed over the past five years.

Focus on electric freight infrastructure

As part of the expansion, Moto is developing plans for 15 dedicated eHGV charging “superhubs” positioned along key freight corridors.

Each site is expected to include over 100 charging bays designed specifically for electric trucks, supporting the transition towards low-emission logistics.

Planning permission has already been secured for new facilities in Swindon and at a truck stop in Wrotham, Kent.

In parallel, Moto is upgrading existing HGV parking areas, with improvements to both security and driver welfare facilities.

Supporting a cleaner transport network

National Highways has welcomed the investment, highlighting the importance of motorway services in supporting safe and sustainable journeys.

Elliot Shaw of National Highways said the long-term agreement will help deliver enhanced facilities for drivers while enabling critical upgrades such as expanded EV charging and improved amenities for HGV operators.

He added that the investment aligns with wider ambitions to create a cleaner and more efficient transport network, while ensuring public assets continue to deliver value for road users.
