The M5 has been closed both directions on Thursday (March 2) after a tipper truck hit an overhead gantry.
The road has been shut near Cribbs Causeway as of around 8.40am and is forcing traffic off the motorway.
Traffic monitoring service Inrix has confirmed the closure in both directions. The latest update says: "M5 in both directions closed long delays, queueing traffic due to recovery work, accident and spillage of hydraulic fluid from J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) to J18 M49. Congestion to Back to J16 (Aztec West) on the south, Traffic is also slow through Henbury, The Industrial Estate through Avonmouth and on the westbound M4 approaching J22 as traffic looks to use the M49 to avoid the closure.
"The lorry will be recovered in two stages, the front of the tipper truck will be first and then the truck itself, Gantry signs need removing too."
National Highways confirmed shortly after the report that the collision involved a tipper truck colliding with an overhead gantry.
