Kerbside Management Trial Shows Positive Impact on London’s High Streets

A recent report from the Cross River Partnership (CRP) has highlighted the benefits of using digital tools to better manage kerbside space for deliveries and collections in busy urban areas.

Working in partnership with Grid Smarter Cities, CRP piloted a scheme introducing eight Virtual Loading Bays (VLBs) across several London boroughs. The initiative formed part of the Kerbside Management Trial, designed to explore how smarter kerbside allocation can support freight efficiency while improving environmental outcomes.

Measurable Results

According to CRP’s findings, the trial reduced the overall distance travelled by delivery vehicles, contributing to air quality improvements in participating areas. Delivery operators reported that the bays provided a reliable and accessible space to stop, improving efficiency and cutting wasted mileage. The booking system, powered by Grid’s Kerb® Delivery platform, was also noted for its ease of use.

The report concluded that local councils are keen to explore new approaches to kerbside management, recognising the potential for innovation to balance the competing pressures on limited street space.

How the Virtual Loading Bays Work

Virtual Loading Bays are designated kerbside areas where restrictions such as red and yellow line parking bans can be temporarily lifted for pre-booked commercial deliveries. Drivers reserve a slot through the Kerb® Delivery platform, giving them guaranteed access to space that would otherwise be off-limits.

Local Authority Involvement

The trial was delivered in collaboration with the City of London Corporation, Camden Council, Lambeth Council, and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Each authority worked alongside CRP and Grid Smarter Cities to test the model in locations where kerbside demand is high and traditional loading can be disruptive.
