Kent County Council is proposing to reduce the speed limit on part of the A224 Orpington Bypass in Badgers Mount from 50mph to 40mph as part of a road safety improvement measure.

The proposed change would apply to a section of the bypass in the Sevenoaks district, covering approximately 940m northbound from the junction with Badgers Mount roundabout.

Safety concerns behind proposal

The council said the lower speed limit is intended to improve safety for pedestrians and other road users while making the route easier to use.

Kent County Council also said the measure could help preserve and improve the local environment and amenities along the road corridor.

Badgers Mount is a small village near Orpington with a population of around 710 people.

Public consultation underway

A 24-day consultation is currently taking place, giving residents, road users and local stakeholders the opportunity to comment on the proposed traffic order.

The consultation is due to close at noon on Monday 8 June.

Once the consultation ends, Kent County Council will review the feedback before deciding whether to make the speed limit order permanent, amend the proposal or abandon it.

Proposed section affected

If approved, the 40mph restriction would replace the existing 50mph limit on the specified stretch of the A224 Orpington Bypass from Badgers Mount roundabout heading north for just under one kilometre.
