Safer Highways announce the most ambitious social value programme ever undertaken in the Highways, Transportation and Construction sectors.
Following the unprecedented times where young people were denied the opportunity to sample industries through work experience, engagement within education establishments was lost due to covid and those entering our sector faced a massive disconnect at a time when we should have been welcoming them into our organisations, Safer Highways are proud to announce a groundbreaking programme designed to inspire and empower the next generation to view our industry as a career of choice and not one of last resort.
Through a series of targeted initiatives will will drive engagement and understanding of the diverse opportunities our sector offers to those who are making decisions about future career aspirations as well as recognising the next generation of leaders we already have in order that we retain them and create an environment where they may thrive.
"Future generations, as I have learned from one to one coaching, see Construction as nothing more than a bloke in PPE with a shovel in their hand on a dirty worksite," Safer Highways CEO Kevin Robinson explained,
"Through our Highways Heroes and Stamp it Out programmes we have made massive strides to show those within our employment that they are valued and indeed that there is a pathway to a fantastic career within our sector, but truth be told we have a long way to go in engaging the next generation."
"That is not an admission of failure but a vision of an opportunity to grow and to learn and indeed to effect change within our industry and make it one which appeals to future leaders.
"Where else can you control an excavator in the Arizona desert by remote control from a safe environment in Milton Keynes or be a part of developing safe systems of work through a digital twin, this is what our industry is in the here and now, we have automated cone laying machines, automatic traffic management deployment and probably some of the most creative minds we could possibly imagine behind these engineering breakthroughs.
"Rising Stars is about showing the next generation that our industry can be a place to realise all of their ambitions and more."
With many leading organisations already signed up as partners to the programme Rising Stars will be a game changer in how we change the perception of our industry and address the massive challenge that is the skills shortage we currently face.
