Transport Scotland has unveiled the first set of route options for bypassing the villages of Springholm and Crocketford on the A75 in Dumfries and Galloway, a key route for local residents and freight traffic.

The proposed designs include single carriageways — with and without dedicated overtaking lanes — as well as dual carriageway options. Early strategic assessments identified three main improvement strategies, which have now been developed into detailed route alignments passing either to the north or south of the villages.

Public Consultation and Engagement

Public engagement events are being held today and tomorrow, giving residents, local businesses, and road users the chance to view the proposed options, ask questions, and provide feedback. The exhibition material is also available online for those unable to attend.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop highlighted the importance of involving the community in shaping the plans:

“We are committed to improving safety, resilience, and reliability for everyone who uses the A75, including freight operators. The initial design work looking at options to bypass Springholm and Crocketford is well underway. The public engagement events provide an opportunity for locals and road users to view the options and share their views. This feedback is vital in helping us develop a preferred route that meets the needs of the community and road users alike.”

Local resident Margaret Campbell, who has lived in Springholm for over 20 years, welcomed the consultation process:

“It’s encouraging to see the project moving forward. The A75 can get very busy, and traffic cutting through the village makes it difficult for pedestrians and schoolchildren. I’m glad our opinions are being sought before any decisions are made.”

Next Steps

Transport Scotland emphasises that the current alignments are initial options and will undergo further assessment before a preferred route is selected. The Cabinet Secretary added:

“Springholm and Crocketford are the only two settlements on the busy A75 that have not yet been bypassed. By identifying a suitable route, we aim to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance the quality of life for people living, visiting, and working in these villages. We expect to announce a preferred route option by early 2027, following careful consideration of community feedback, environmental factors, and engineering assessments.”

The project forms part of wider efforts to enhance Scotland’s transport network, balancing safety, efficiency, and local community needs. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to take part in the consultation, either by attending the events or reviewing the exhibition materials online.
