HS2 is set to begin one of its most significant phases of motorway-related construction this summer, with a series of major engineering operations planned to carry the high-speed railway over key sections of the West Midlands road network.

The programme will involve the installation of several large structures spanning the M42, M6 Toll and M6, marking a major milestone in the delivery of the railway between London and Birmingham.

Viaducts to Cross M42 and M6 Toll

Among the most prominent elements of the programme will be the extension of two single-track viaducts across the M42 and M6 Toll interchange area near Water Orton.

Elsewhere, construction teams will install a substantial twin-box structure over both carriageways of the M42 close to Birmingham Business Park. The structure will create a passage for the future railway route above the motorway.

A separate operation will see a twin-track viaduct positioned across the M6 near Chelmsley Wood, further advancing the route through the region.

The works represent the next stage in a series of structures that have gradually emerged alongside major roads over the past year and are now beginning to connect across live traffic corridors.

Extensive Planning to Reduce Disruption

HS2 and its construction partner Balfour Beatty VINCI have spent more than a year developing the programme alongside National Highways, with a strong focus on minimising disruption to motorists.

Originally, the work was expected to require nine separate motorway closure periods. However, by coordinating several major activities to take place during the same weekends, the project team has reduced the number of planned closures to six.

To limit the impact on road users, closures will be confined to weekends, beginning at 9pm on Friday evenings and ending at 5am on Monday mornings.

Project leaders say this approach will help maintain traffic flow during the busiest weekday periods while still allowing complex construction activities to proceed safely.

Visible Progress on HS2 Route

The motorway crossing programme highlights the continued progress being made across the HS2 route, although substantial construction activity remains ahead before the railway can be completed.

The 140-mile line between London and Birmingham continues to undergo a major review led by HS2 Ltd Chief Executive Mark Wild. The exercise is focused on improving efficiency, controlling costs and ensuring the remainder of the project is delivered as effectively as possible.

Alongside cost and programme management, the organisation says reducing impacts on local communities and maintaining productive construction practices remain key priorities.

Team Effort Behind Complex Engineering Works

Agnes Usciak, Senior Project Manager for the motorway crossing works, said the structures being built alongside the M42 and M6 are already demonstrating visible progress on the railway.

She noted that the coming months will see these structures extended across the carriageways, creating some of the most recognisable features of the route to date.

Usciak also praised the collaboration between HS2, its contractors and partner organisations, highlighting the extensive planning required to condense such a large programme of work into a reduced number of weekend closures.

The six-month construction programme is expected to play a crucial role in advancing the railway through the West Midlands and bringing several major sections of the route closer to completion.
