The upgrade of Salford Central station in Greater Manchester, costing £10m and designed to improve accessibility and customer experience, is now complete.
The upgrade, carried out by Story Contracting, came in on time and budget, and was a collaboration between Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Network Rail, and the train operator Northern.
The work included replacing the roof on the station’s upper level, building a new ticket office and installing accessible toilets. Other improvements included constructing a covered walkway from the lift on platform 1, improving the platforms and ramps, and better passenger information displays, such as a braille map.
Work is also nearing completion on the construction of an additional platform at Salford Crescent, designed to improve passenger flow and reduce train delays.
Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, commented that the works at Salford Central will make it much easier for all passengers to use the station and improve their journeys.
This is all part of wider plans to create a fairer, greener and more inclusive city for all with access to great public transport that connects people with where they need to be.
