Farrans Construction has been awarded the contract to deliver a major £59 million infrastructure project that will significantly improve connectivity between Paisley town centre, Glasgow Airport, and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS).
Led by Renfrewshire Council, the AMIDS South scheme is now entering its construction planning phase, with the full route scheduled to open in 2028.
The transformative project will feature a new road bridge over Paisley Harbour, a 1.7km route running along the White Cart River, and enhanced walking and cycling infrastructure. These links will improve sustainable transport connections between Paisley’s bus and rail interchanges, AMIDS, Inchinnan, and Glasgow Airport.
The scheme also includes a new road from Renfrew Road to the new bridge, directly linking with the planned Paisley Grammar School Community Campus. In addition, Farrans will deliver a new safe pedestrian and cycling route from Gallowhill, utilising an underpass along a disused railway line. Transport Scotland is contributing £1.5 million toward this active travel component.
The project is being supported by £38.7 million in funding from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, with an additional £18.8 million invested by Renfrewshire Council.
AMIDS South is expected to unlock £136 million in private sector investment, reduce carbon emissions by approximately 21,700 tonnes, and create new employment opportunities across the region.
Patrick Murray, Regional Director for Farrans in Scotland, commented:"We’re proud to be appointed to this flagship infrastructure project and are currently working through the final pre-construction stages with our client. We look forward to engaging with the local community as we prepare to begin work on site."
This latest scheme follows Farrans’ successful delivery of the Govan to Partick Bridge in Glasgow and continues the momentum of Renfrewshire Council’s broader capital investment strategy. The council’s long-term programme includes a £90 million roads renewal initiative and £170 million in planned investment across the school estate.
Further details regarding the procurement route and contract type for the AMIDS South project have not yet been disclosed.
