Essex Highways has carried out extensive seasonal maintenance, clearing more than 62,000 drains between 1 April and 29 August to help prepare the county for the colder and wetter months ahead.

Regular drain clearing is a key part of reducing flood risks, which can pose hazards to both drivers and pedestrians. This year, an extra boost from the council’s £8 million Priority One programme has funded two additional drain-clearing crews, who will continue work into 2026.

They are supported by four jetting units operating across Essex each week, tackling problems through:

  • High-pressure jet cleaning

  • CCTV surveys and investigations

  • Emergency drainage works

  • Requests from councillors

The initiative is designed to strengthen flood prevention measures and keep roads safe as winter approaches.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure, and Sustainable Transport at Essex County Council, said:“We are working tirelessly to make sure our roads and drainage systems are ready for whatever the seasons bring. Our crews are already out in force, addressing problems before they escalate, and helping to deliver a safer, greener, and healthier Essex for everyone.”
