Staffordshire County Council is set to begin vital repairs on Morfe Mill Bridge in Enville next week, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain the region’s historic transport infrastructure.
Starting Monday 6 October, the bridge, which carries Morfe House Lane over Philley Brook, will undergo a 10-week programme of structural strengthening and preservation works, designed to extend its lifespan and prevent future deterioration.
The project, valued at £300,000, includes the installation of a reinforced concrete saddle, replacement of the parapets, brickwork repairs and repointing, and the addition of scour protection to safeguard against erosion around the bridge foundations.
To allow the work to be carried out safely, a section of Morfe House Lane will be temporarily closed between Poolhouse Farm and Morfe House Farm. While access will be maintained for residents, there will be no through route for general traffic. A clearly signed diversion will be put in place for the duration of the works.
Councillor Peter Mason, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said the bridge—now over a century old—has been regularly monitored to ensure safety, and these upgrades are a proactive step to avoid more significant disruption in the future.
“Morfe Mill Bridge is more than 100 years old, and like all our bridges, it’s routinely inspected to make sure it remains safe and functional,” he said. “This strengthening work is crucial to preserving the bridge’s integrity for years to come, and we’re grateful for the public’s patience while the improvements are carried out.”
The works form part of the council’s wider investment in maintaining critical infrastructure and ensuring the continued safety of road users throughout Staffordshire.
