Drivers will be directed along a massive 40-mile diversion when half-a-mile of road is closed near Cirencester. The A429 is to be shut overnight from 7pm to 7am in both directions between the Tetbury Road and Stroud Road roundabouts starting today (Monday, April 3) until Friday, April 14.
The official diversion route takes motorists on a route through Stroud, Painswick, Brockworth, Coberley, Rendcomb and North Cerney. Gloucestershire County Council says it knows motorists will be aware of other, shorter alternatives, but says: "This approved diversion should the most suitable route for vehicles that need to keep to the same or a similar class of road."
The Tetbury Road closure is for carriageway resurfacing and will not be in place during weekends and bank holidays. The county council said the work is part of its promise to invest a further £100 million in the county’s roads

In a letter to residents, highways addressed the long diversion saying: "We have created an official diversion route which will be signposted and is suitable for all vehicles that would normally use the closed road. We appreciate you may know an alternative route, however, please be aware alternative routes which are outside of the road closure area are used at driver’s discretion."
As the work involves hot asphalt and large equipment, highways said it will be unable to allow traffic through the road closure. If you normally drive into or out of the area affected during the hours when the closure s in place, you will need to make alternative arrangements, highways says.
There is also the usual warning that resurfacing can be affected by heavy rain, machinery breakdown and unforseen technical issues. This means dates and details can change at short notice.
