Drivers advised to plan ahead for M5 road closures

A section of the M5 will be closed for four nights this week to allow resurfacing and essential survey work.

The motorway will be fully closed in both directions between junction 19, for Gordano, near Bristol, and junction 21, for Weston-super-Mare.

The road will be shut between the hours of 22:00 and 06:00 BST Monday to Thursday.

Clean air zone (CAZ) charges will not apply when the signed diversion routes are followed.

The closures will enable work to be conducted ahead of bridge refurbishment scheduled for next year.

Southbound HGV traffic will be diverted via the A4 and A370 from junction 18, to re-join the M5 at junction 21, with the northbound diversion route operating in reverse.

Cars and other lighter vehicles will be diverted via junctions 19 and 21, using the A369 and A370, and local traffic will still be able to make journeys across the junctions.

Heather Lang from National Highways said: "We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating but we're keeping the closures to an absolute minimum and when traffic flows will be at their lowest, and we've been liaising with Bristol City Council to ensure CAZ exemptions along the diversion route."
