The Department for Transport has announced a new senior leadership role of Director General, created to provide strategic direction across multiple areas of policy and innovation.
The position, which does not currently feature on the department’s organisational chart, will oversee themes such as national transport planning, science and technology, artificial intelligence, data use, and decarbonisation.
The successful candidate will work directly with the transport secretary to shape a long-term vision for the sector, with an integrated national transport strategy already in development.
Applicants will need substantial experience in delivering complex strategies, both internally and in collaboration with other organisations. Proven expertise in data-led innovation and operating in challenging environments is also essential.
Strong leadership skills are a core requirement, with the department seeking someone able to build diverse, multi-skilled teams, strengthen capability, and steer staff through major organisational change under public scrutiny.
The role offers a salary of £130,000 per year, with applications closing on 20 September 2025.
