CrossCountry has published its 2026 Social Value report, highlighting the company’s growing contribution to communities, the environment, and the wider economy.

Released on 17 April, the report outlines how social value is embedded across the operator’s day-to-day activities. This includes improving accessibility on the rail network, creating inclusive job opportunities, supporting local initiatives, and encouraging more sustainable travel choices.

Over the past year, CrossCountry’s calculated social value has reached £184 million, reflecting both enhanced monitoring methods and more transparent reporting of its social, environmental, and community-focused efforts.

The report aligns closely with the company’s broader Sustainability Strategy, which is built around three core themes: people, places, and the planet. Social value is used as a consistent way to measure the impact across all three areas, helping the organisation better understand and communicate its contributions.

This year’s publication introduces more detailed reporting, including both direct emissions and emissions avoided through encouraging lower-carbon transport options. This expanded approach provides a clearer picture of how the company supports national decarbonisation goals.

Jessica Lockwood, CrossCountry’s Environment and Sustainability Manager, said the framework allows the business to measure its impact beyond simply running train services. She added that the improved reporting helps demonstrate the long-term benefits delivered to communities and the environment.

The report also highlights tangible outcomes from recent initiatives. Collaboration with Newcastle Rail Academy has resulted in two students securing onboard roles, marking the start of new careers in the rail industry. Meanwhile, environmental partnerships with GreenTheUK and the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust have enhanced biodiversity along the Lias Line, a National Cycle Network route near Leamington Spa.

These projects have included tree planting, installation of wildlife habitats, and sowing native wildflowers, contributing to greener, more resilient environments while supporting active travel.

CrossCountry says its continued investment in such initiatives not only benefits local communities but also strengthens links between rail travel and sustainable transport options.

Thomas Raynor, Head of Strategy at CrossCountry, emphasised that the company’s role extends beyond operating trains. He noted that its social value approach aims to drive regional growth, create opportunities, and support a transition to lower-carbon travel—delivering meaningful, long-term benefits across the UK.
