Costain has been awarded a £75 million, five-year contract to continue delivering project controls and nuclear services for EDF’s UK nuclear power stations.
The company has been working with EDF since 2017, supporting the safe operation, plant life extension, and preparations for defueling and decommissioning across EDF’s eight nuclear sites, including Sizewell B. The latest framework extension will run until 2030, following previous renewals in 2021 and 2023.
Under the contract, Costain will provide specialist capabilities to enhance project performance, achieve cost efficiencies, and support strategic resource planning. The company will also assist EDF in transitioning from electricity generation to the defueling of advanced gas-cooled reactors.
Currently, Costain has 170 staff involved in over 400 projects under this framework.
Bob Anstey, Sector Director for Defence and Nuclear Energy at Costain, said:
“The extension of our partnership with EDF highlights our strong position in the UK civil nuclear sector and our consistent delivery of high-quality nuclear decommissioning and project controls services. Since 2017, we have expanded our range of services and delivered projects to the highest safety standards. We remain committed to supporting skills development in the sector, helping to futureproof the workforce and contribute to local prosperity.”
The framework extension comes at a time of growth for Costain in the nuclear energy sector. The company recently secured contracts for utilities infrastructure upgrades at Sellafield,
decommissioning work at Trawsfynydd nuclear power station, expertise for Sizewell C construction, and the design of Urenco’s advanced nuclear fuels production facility in Cheshire.
