Officers from West Yorkshire Police have been targeting the safety of commercial vehicles as a part of a joint operation with police colleagues and partners.
Known as Operation Brigantia, our Roads Policing Unit officers teamed up with forces across the North East region, together with National Highways and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) vehicle examiners to ensure lorries and vans were safely loaded and in a roadworthy condition.
Strategic checks points were set up throughout the region, with our officers located off the A1 at Boston Spa and at Woolley Edge Services on the M1.
A total of 65 vehicles were stopped, including Light Goods Vehicles (LGV), Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV), and the following actions were taken:
40 Traffic offence reports, for insecure loads, seatbelts and defects such as cracked windscreens and bald tyres.
30 Graduated fixed penalty tickets for being overweight and tachograph offences to both UK and overseas drivers.
Three seizures for suspected driving while uninsured or without correct licence and three reports for court - one such seizure was an 18,000kg vehicle that was 5,000kg overweight, with an insecure load and no insurance.
Two Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme notices issued
18 Immediate Prohibitions for having dangerous parts or being in a dangerous condition
Six Delayed Prohibitions – where drivers are given the opportunity to lighten a vehicle’s load
Two Abandoned Vehicles
West Yorkshire Police is working with partners as part of Vision Zero with the aim to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.
It uses the Safe System approach which has five pillars of action: safe road users and behaviours, safe speeds, safe roads, safe vehicles and post-collision response.
