South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard has confirmed that conversations have been held with Chinese investment groups as efforts continue to secure financial backing for the planned reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
The discussions, initially reported by the Yorkshire Post, are part of a broader search for long-term funding partners to support the airport's return to operation. Regional leaders have repeatedly emphasised that the project extends beyond aviation, positioning it as a catalyst for economic growth through logistics, advanced manufacturing and attracting new business investment to the region.
The airport ceased commercial operations in 2022 after owner Peel Group concluded a strategic review of the site. Its closure left South Yorkshire without a major passenger airport and prompted local authorities to develop plans aimed at restoring aviation services through a publicly supported redevelopment programme.
Interest from overseas investors comes at a time when competition for infrastructure funding is increasing globally. Airports, transport authorities and governments are actively seeking private capital to support terminal upgrades, cargo facilities and wider connectivity improvements.
For many regional airports across the UK, securing external investment has become increasingly important as operators face mounting costs, ageing infrastructure and growing demands to improve sustainability and resilience.
Coppard has consistently described the airport's revival as an economic development project rather than solely a return to passenger flights. Future plans for the site include ambitions around freight operations, logistics services and aerospace-related activities, reflecting a wider shift across the aviation sector as airports seek to diversify revenue streams beyond traditional passenger traffic.
However, questions remain regarding the financial viability of the scheme and the level of investment required to fully restore commercial passenger services. South Yorkshire leaders approved a £160 million funding package in 2025 to help facilitate the airport's reopening, with significant passenger operations currently targeted to begin by 2028.
