Cambridgeshire County Council has been confirmed as the host authority for the UK’s National Active Travel Conference in 2026.
The two-day event, titled Active County Cambridgeshire, will take place on 13–14 July in Cambridge.
Delivered by Landor LINKS, the National Active Travel Conference was first launched in 2015 and brings together policymakers, practitioners, and industry experts to share best practice in walking, cycling, and wheeling. The 2026 conference will be held at the Ray Dolby Centre and the West Hub, with Cambridgeshire County Council hosting the event alongside support from the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA). The CPCA will also sponsor the afternoon session on the first day.
The conference programme will align closely with the council’s ambition to make travel across Cambridgeshire safer, more inclusive, and more environmentally sustainable, while supporting thriving places and communities. Under the theme Active County Cambridgeshire, the event will focus on improving connections between communities to enhance health, wellbeing, and accessibility.
Key topics set to be explored include rural connectivity and integrated networks, the role of active travel in supporting local economies, public health and wellbeing benefits, and the links between transport, housing growth, and land-use planning. Sessions will also address school travel, commuter and leisure access, and how to better communicate the wider social value of active travel.
Councillor Alex Beckett, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways and Transport Committee, said hosting the conference reflects the progress already made locally in promoting active travel.
“I’m delighted to welcome the National Active Travel Conference to Cambridgeshire in 2026,” he said. “Being selected as host is a strong endorsement of the work being done across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to encourage walking, cycling and wheeling.
“Active travel is one of the council’s top priorities and central to our vision of creating a greener, fairer and more caring Cambridgeshire. When people are supported to choose active ways of travelling, it leads to safer streets, cleaner air, stronger communities and improved health for everyone.”
