Plans for a new relief road aimed at easing congestion in Blyth have been approved by councillors, with the scheme now dependent on final government funding confirmation.

The £55 million project proposes the construction of a dual carriageway at the western end of the A1061, including a 0.8-mile (1.3km) link between the A192 Three Horseshoes junction and the Portland Wynd roundabout. The scheme also includes dualling an existing section of single carriageway and delivering a new connecting road between Chase Farm Drive and Ogle Drive.

Northumberland County Council’s head of planning, Liz Sinnamon, acknowledged the complexity of the build but said the scheme would deliver meaningful improvements to traffic flow in the area.

Funding for the project is expected to come primarily from central government, with around £50 million anticipated, while the council has committed £4.3 million. A final decision from government is expected later this summer.

Council leader Glen Sanderson described the scheme as a priority intervention, highlighting ongoing congestion challenges in the town. Deputy leader Richard Wearmouth added that securing the remaining funding is the final step, with the council continuing to press for confirmation.

However, the plans were not without opposition. Labour councillor Caroline Ball questioned whether the scheme would adequately address existing congestion issues, suggesting a more ambitious solution may have been required. Independent councillor Georgina Hill also raised concerns over the long-term value of the investment.

Members of the public echoed these concerns during the meeting, with objections focusing on the perceived benefits of the scheme relative to its cost.

Despite this, the proposal was approved by seven votes to two, with one abstention, allowing the project to progress to the next stage subject to funding approval.

Thank you for such a helpful and easy-to-follow article. The explanations were clear and practical. It also inspired me to explore the market maker program https://institutional.whitebit.com/market-making-program further, and I’m quite happy with what I’ve found so far.
