Transport for Wales (TfW) has partnered with Heartbeat Trust UK to install 18 bleed control kits across stations in Cardiff, marking the first rollout of its kind in the Welsh capital.
The lifesaving equipment has been placed within existing defibrillator cabinets to ensure it is highly visible and easily accessible to the public during emergencies.
Expanding public access to lifesaving equipment
The kits, funded by the Masonic Benevolent Fund of South Wales, use the Daniel Baird Foundation model, widely adopted across England. Each kit contains military-grade medical supplies designed to help members of the public respond to severe bleeding incidents before emergency services arrive.
The Cardiff rollout builds on a similar initiative in 2025, when kits were installed at TfW stations in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot.
Part of wider community safety programme
The scheme forms part of a broader safety initiative launched 18 months ago by Heartbeat Trust UK, aimed at increasing access to critical bleed control equipment across Wales.
Since its inception, the programme has supported the installation of more than 650 kits in communities nationwide, with backing from local authorities and emergency services.
“Could make a critical difference”
Rebecca Davies, station manager for Cardiff Central, said the initiative would enhance safety for passengers and the wider community.
“Our stations are at the heart of the communities we serve, and having this equipment available could make a critical difference in an emergency,” she said.
Melanie James JP, trustee of Heartbeat Trust UK, described the rollout as a significant step forward in public safety.
“These kits save lives, and their presence in Cardiff’s stations will give the public vital tools to act quickly in an emergency,” she said.
Strengthening station safety
The installation reflects a growing focus on publicly accessible emergency equipment in transport hubs, where large numbers of people pass through daily.
By integrating bleed control kits alongside defibrillators, TfW and its partners aim to ensure that life-saving interventions can be delivered quickly, potentially improving outcomes in critical situations.
