Residents and local businesses in Birmingham are being urged to take part in a month-long cycling initiative this September.

Birmingham City Council is backing Cycle September, a campaign delivered by the cycling platform Love to Ride, which aims to highlight the health, environmental, and social benefits of cycling.

Participants can record their rides through the Love to Ride app for a chance to win prizes, with the initiative open to everyone regardless of cycling experience.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Whether you’re a keen cyclist, never cycled before or just occasionally hop on your bike to go to the park, you can join in.“And it isn’t just about September or wining some prizes; it is a great opportunity to have a go at cycling and try out some of the excellent facilities in Birmingham. We have great cycle routes in parks, dedicated cycle lanes for those who want to commute and there are lots of opportunities to go on group rides.”

Birmingham offers a wide range of cycling opportunities, from traffic-free paths along canals and through parks to quieter roads and purpose-built cycle lanes for commuters.

Cycling clubs, organised group rides, and adult training sessions are also available, while children can build confidence and essential road skills through the Bikeability programme.

More information on cycling opportunities across the city can be found on the council’s cycling webpages.
