Nearly all roads in Birmingham have now seen their 40mph speed limits removed, with the vast majority reverting to 30mph or lower.
Only a small number of routes are exempt from the change, including the A38(M) Aston Expressway, the A456 Quinton Expressway and the A4041 Queslett Road, which marks the boundary with Walsall.
The changes form part of Birmingham City Council’s Road Harm Reduction Strategy, which aims to cut collision rates while improving air quality and strengthening the city’s transport network.
While no physical alterations have been made to road layouts and no additional speed cameras have been installed, existing enforcement cameras have been adjusted to reflect the new limits.
Councillor Majid Mahmood said the move was a significant step towards improving safety on Birmingham’s roads.
“Reducing speed limits helps create safer streets, cleaner air and a transport network that works better for everyone,” he said.
The council is working closely with West Midlands Police to support the transition, with a focus on both driver education and enforcement.
Assistant Chief Constable Mike O’Hara said tackling speed remains central to reducing serious injuries and fatalities on the region’s roads.
“Our priority is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on West Midlands roads, and excessive speed is a major factor in many serious collisions,” he said.
