Amazon is launching its largest-ever electric vehicle expansion in the UK, deploying a major new fleet of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) and hundreds of electric delivery vans as part of its wider decarbonisation strategy.

The online retailer has begun rolling out the first batch of electric trucks in a large-scale order that will bring its UK eHGV fleet to 160 vehicles once fully deployed. The trucks will transport goods between Amazon logistics sites nationwide and are expected to cover the annual equivalent of 450 trips around the Earth, delivering more than 300 million products each year.

Alongside the new trucks, Amazon is introducing over 800 new electric vans to its delivery fleet this winter. The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter vans feature enhanced safety systems, ergonomic driver layouts, and practical design upgrades such as custom shelving and sliding bulkhead doors to streamline package handling.

In London, Amazon is also expanding its on-foot delivery network, adding Camden as the fourth borough to join the scheme following successful pilots in Hackney, Westminster, and Islington. The approach uses strategically parked vans as mobile mini-hubs, from which delivery associates collect packages and distribute them on foot through nearby streets. This initiative has already enabled the delivery of more than one million packages in 2025, helping to cut emissions and reduce congestion across the capital.

The Camden expansion supports the borough’s Freight and Servicing Action Plan, which aims to reduce delivery-related emissions and improve air quality.

Cllr Adam Harrison, Camden Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and a Sustainable Camden, said:

“We hope this trial will help reduce van miles and improve local air quality. We’ll be monitoring the impacts closely and using the findings to shape future freight policy.”

Nicola Fyfe, Amazon’s EU Vice President of Logistics, described the rollout as a major milestone in the company’s efforts to decarbonise its UK transport operations.

“These trucks, along with our growing electric van fleet and on-foot delivery model, are a win for customers, the environment, and our business,” she said. “However, the key challenge in scaling this across the logistics sector remains charging infrastructure. While we’ve invested heavily in our own facilities, broader industry and government collaboration will be vital to build the national network needed for widespread electric vehicle adoption.”
