Work to replace stolen cabling that caused damage to several electronic signs and CCTV cameras along the A14 is scheduled to take place this summer.

Cambridgeshire Police recorded eight incidents of cable theft between April and May last year, affecting the stretch between the A1 at Huntingdon and the M11 near Cambridge. The investigation was later paused due to a lack of new leads.

National Highways previously confirmed in August that it did not yet have a timeline for restoring the damaged infrastructure. However, the agency has now stated that replacement cables are on order and will be installed once delivered in the coming months.

A spokesperson for National Highways explained that, in addition to the stolen cables, ducting along the route had also been damaged but has since been repaired. Installation of the new cabling is expected to complete the restoration of the affected systems.

They added that the organisation continues to work closely with police and thanked motorists for their patience while repairs are carried out. A review of security measures is also underway to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Investigators believe the initial thefts occurred between 8 April and 25 May 2025, although further incidents may have taken place later in the year, with National Highways indicating activity as recently as August.

In the meantime, drivers have been alerted to the ongoing issues through temporary signage. Emergency roadside SOS phones in the area remain fully operational.
