Road safety and marking specialist WJ Group has officially launched RapidLine, a cutting-edge road marking solution.

Launched at the LCRIG Innovation Festival, RapidLine is a cold-applied, UV-cured material that delivers instant curing, high levels of visibility and long-term durability. These qualities mark it out as a powerful tool for local authorities looking to enhance the delivery of maintenance on busy roads, reducing the need for traffic management to maintain roadworks whilst waiting for cold applied materials to cure.

“Minimising the impact of our work on road users and local communities is a key challenge facing the highways sector,” said Wayne Johnston, CEO and Founder of WJ Group.

“With RapidLine, we’re offering a smarter solution that speeds up delivery and reduces disruption. But it has also been developed to address other competing demands that many local authorities face today – namely safety, sustainability and return on investment.”

Johnston continues: “The highways industry faces growing pressures to improve road safety and reduce its environmental impact – all while managing tighter budgets. At WJ, we’re constantly innovating to support our partners in navigating these challenges. RapidLine is a step-change solution in this respect.”

Over the past year, WJ has rigorously trialled and refined RapidLine to ensure it meets the demands of today’s highways. Independent testing – including evaluation on Spain’s AETEC turntable -demonstrated exceptional durability. Tested to P7, or 4 million wheel-overs, the material maintained high levels of retro-reflectivity throughout, achieving R3, RW6 and RR5 at this stage. Initial application trials have also recorded values exceeding 600 mcd, supporting enhanced visibility, particularly in low-light and wet conditions.

Beyond performance, RapidLine can also be considered a more environmentally friendly choice over other cold plastics. It is spray applied as a thin layer for centre and edge lines, as well as for arrows, letters and other symbols, minimising the amount of material needed. Curing through ultraviolet light also means there are no potentially harmful volatile organic compounds used in this process.

“RapidLine is the result of extensive research, testing, and collaboration,” Johnston added. “We’ve invested significant time and expertise in bringing RapidLine to market. It’s a smarter and more efficient way to improve the country’s road infrastructure. I’m incredibly proud of our team and excited to see the benefits this innovation will bring to authorities and road users alike.”
