West Country road melts as surface temperatures reach 50C

The surface of the road is melting in the heat and it has been closed to traffic

A West Country road is melting and has been closed to prevent damage to the surface. Devon County Council has been forced to shut a road just off the A30 in Okehampton which had only recently been resurfaced.

It comes after the council warned road temperatures are exceeding 50C. Devon Alert tweeted: "#Devon With road surface temperatures exceeding 50 C on a daily basis at the moment, part of this work may involve dusting the road down, so don't be alarmed if you see this activity out and about on the roads over the coming days."

The closure is in place from Glendon Cross to Crossways Cross. Diversions are in place until further notice, reports Devon Live
