Waymo, the US-based driverless car company owned by Alphabet, has announced plans to operate a robotaxi service in London as early as September 2026.

A pilot service is expected to begin in April, with vehicles initially monitored by safety drivers while mapping the city’s streets. When the full service opens to passengers, the cars will operate without a human behind the wheel.

Local Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood said the government is supporting Waymo and other operators through passenger pilots and pro-innovation regulations to make self-driving cars a reality on UK roads. She added that autonomous vehicles are expected to improve road safety, noting:"Unlike human drivers, automated vehicles don’t get tired, distracted, or drive under the influence."

However, Greenwood emphasised that all autonomous vehicles must meet strict safety standards before being allowed on UK roads, including safeguards against cyber attacks and hacking.

The UK government has indicated it plans to update regulations in the second half of 2026 to formally allow driverless taxis in London, though no exact date has been set.

Autonomous vehicles are seen as a major economic opportunity. The government estimates the sector could contribute £42 billion to the UK economy by 2035 and create nearly 40,000 new jobs.
