Hammersmith and Fulham Council has approved a new draft Local Plan which would see both the Hammersmith gyratory and flyover removed.

They would be replaced with underground road links by their owners, Transport for London.

The flyover and sections of the A4 would be replaced with a tunnel, which the council says will free up land for development and reconnect Hammersmith town centre to the riverside.

“Just as the Victorians had the vision to put trains underground, we’re now doing the same with roads,” a statement reads. “The flyover has divided Hammersmith from the River Thames for more than 60 years. This plan will heal that divide by creating new affordable homes and offices, new green spaces and keep traffic flowing.”

However, recently a spokesperson for TfL said they had “no plans” to replace the flyover. “Each borough’s local plan sets out its long-term vision and we are always open to discussing any element of these,” they added.
