Transport UK London Bus has partnered with Targa Telematics to enhance how its crew ferry vehicles are managed, introducing a digital solution to streamline operations.

More than 80 vehicles are now integrated into Targa Telematics’ Car Sharing system, which allows authorised drivers to access vehicles securely without the need for physical keys. These vehicles are spread across four of the operator’s six depots, with full implementation expected by the end of April.

The system replaces traditional key cabinets with a digital platform, improving efficiency and reducing issues linked to lost or misplaced keys. Access is restricted to approved personnel, while also providing a clear audit trail of vehicle usage.

Drivers gain entry using individual RFID cards, which are scanned via a dashboard reader. Once verified, the system disables the vehicle immobiliser and logs the start of the journey. A structured sign-out process at the end of each trip ensures accurate tracking and accountability.

David Cutts, Managing Director of Transport UK London Bus, highlighted the importance of reliable driver changeovers in maintaining service standards. He noted that, following a successful trial, the partnership with Targa Telematics delivers a secure and efficient way for staff to access ferry vehicles—many of which are now zero-emission, in line with the wider fleet.

Chris Horbowyj, UK Commercial Director at Targa Telematics, said the collaboration supports the effective running of one of London’s key transport networks. He emphasised that while driver changeovers are often overlooked, they are essential to operations, and digitising vehicle access reduces risks while improving efficiency and service reliability.

He added that the initiative demonstrates how advanced digital tools can strengthen operational performance and resilience in complex public transport systems.
