A road in Lichfield has been blocked after fly-tippers dumped large amounts of rubbish there.

Businesses and residents have been unable to use Watery Lane in Lichfield after a "lorry load" of waste was left on the road.

Police were called to the lane at 6.15am this morning. Staffordshire Police have closed off the road access through Eastern Avenue and Wood End Lane. Lichfield District Council are aware.

Flytipping is the illegal dumping of liquid or solid waste in land or in water. The waste is usually dumped to avoid disposal costs.

The pile of rubbish has blocked both sides of the road across a stretch covering a number of metres and is at the junction with Wood End Lane.

One company owner in the area said: "Not only have the individuals behind this blocked the road for local residents, but emergency services are unable to get down there now."And to add insult to injury, this is the only road into the countryside centre so you’re stopping around 20 small businesses from operating."

Another business said this morning’s incident was the latest blow to companies in the area. They said: “We have struggled for the past 12 months to cope with the constant road closures with the new housing development and HS2 closing the road to Lichfield under the railway bridge. “Now we have been victim to a large fly-tipping offence which has blocked residents and also excluded access to Curborough Countryside Centre.”

A spokesperson for Lichfield District Council said: “We’re aware of a large quantity of waste that has been fly tipped in Watery Lane.

"Due to the scale of the fly-tipping, we immediately informed the Environment Agency. In the meantime, our environmental health officers are looking for evidence whilst we make arrangements to safely remove and dispose of the waste as soon as possible."Anyone with information on fly-tipping can report it to Lichfield District Council.
