Thousands of London Underground ticket barriers are being rebranded as part of a new sponsorship deal that will offer travellers cashback on their fares when they pay with a Chase debit card.
Transport for London (TfL) has agreed a multi-year partnership with the online bank, which will see Chase become the official payment provider across the network. About 5,000 contactless-enabled barriers will carry Chase branding, with the first installations completed on Monday at 12 of the capital’s busiest stations, including King’s Cross, Victoria, Waterloo, Tottenham Court Road and London Bridge. The remaining stations are scheduled to be updated in January.
Under the agreement, passengers paying for Tube, London Overground, Elizabeth line or DLR journeys with a Chase debit card will receive 1 per cent cashback on the cost of their travel—worth up to £15 per month, or £180 per year.
The familiar yellow card readers will remain on buses, and passengers will still be able to use Oyster or non-Chase contactless cards as usual.
The Chase partnership replaces TfL’s previous tie-in with Google Pay. Further branding and promotional activity linked to the new deal will roll out across the network in the coming months. TfL said it would publish the value of the sponsorship shortly.
Emma Strain, TfL’s customer director, said the agreement demonstrates how commercial partnerships can support the transport authority’s finances. “Pay-as-you-go with contactless is now the most popular way to travel in London,” she said. “This partnership with Chase is a great example of how TfL can work with brands, and we look forward to delivering more customer-focused activity over the coming years.” Around three-quarters of all TfL journeys are now made using contactless pay-as-you-go.
Chase is positioning the move as part of a wider push to expand its presence in the UK. The bank’s UK chief executive, Kuba Fast, said the collaboration would allow the company to “enhance the travel experience for Londoners and visitors alike”. Chase customers already earn 1 per cent cashback on spending such as groceries, fuel and transport across the country.
After the first year, customers need to deposit at least £1,500 a month into their Chase account to continue receiving the cashback benefit.
TfL confirmed that revenue raised through the deal will be reinvested directly back into the transport network.
